What I learned:

One of the cool things about publishing is….meeting other authors!

This week, renowned author Jonathan Goodman takes over my newsletter with a lightning-round, five question interview on his latest release.

Most productivity advice tells you “to do more, optimize more, and hustle more.”

My friend Jonathan Goodman spent years figuring out why that approach leaves us burned out and empty.

His new book Unhinged Habits: A Counterintuitive Guide for Humans to Have More by Doing Less reveals how to break bad habits and build a rich life by mastering the art of strategic subtraction.

If you liked Atomic Habits or Essentialism, you’ll love this book.

  1. What’s the most dangerous idea in the book, in your opinion?

Becoming aware of your own "When-I-Finally" traps. Being faced with the reality that the work you feel you have to do today means something you’ll laugh at in five years. And that you should value the stuff you won’t laugh at. Like love. Or a good book. Or your health. This'll be a hard pill to swallow for some.

  1. Who is this book really for …. and who is it not for?

The book is for men and women who have achieved the success their younger self worked hard to achieve, yet still feel like something is missing–that they are living someone else's definition of success rather than their own.

  1. If an orthodontist, dentist, sales rep, or any reader could apply just one idea from the book, what do you personally hope it is?

Over time, responsibilities add up, commitments compound, and the stuff we own tends to own us. Unhinged Habits will help over busy, overscheduled people embrace strategic subtraction in possessions, obligations, and commitments.

  1. What research or insight surprised you the most while writing it?

That transformation often requires crossing intensity (unhinged) thresholds that moderate effort can't reach.

  1. If this book’s tagline were a billboard, what’s it say?

“Set yourself up for a bright future without missing the magic in the present.”
